Vendo Coca Cola Machine Serial Number Chart
Most Vendo serial numbers begin with three digits off to the left. These first three digits are the build date of the machine. You must dis-regard any letters in your serial number in order to understand this code
Serial Number Example: 403 56501 (4 = 1954, 03 = March, 56501 = consecutive serial number) For this example, the machine was built in March of 1954
This code was used on most Vendo soda machines built from the late 1940's thru the 1960's
The rest of this page and the chart below offer a historical flow of the Coke machines Vendo built during the 1940's and 1950's
DO NOT use the year of a soda machine to determine its value or to obtain parts! All that is needed is the manufacture and the model number of a soda machine for that. The year of a soda machine is simply for enjoyment ONLY!

Vendo 83 Mechanical Coca Cola Machine

This was Vendo's first mass produced, upright, coin operated soda machine. To operate, you simply inserted 5 or 10 cents in the slot to the upper right, the coin mechanically allows you to lift the silver bottle door, this action turns the bottle drum inside and retrieves 1 of the 83 bottles this machine can vend. This machine will only vend one selection. And it will only hold the new 8 oz Coke bottles or the small 7 oz beer bottles if you wish. Most of the V-83's built came with a less than great Frigidaire cooling system. Now days, this can be replaced with a new, more efficient cooling system. It is a cost factor to remember when repairing or restoring a V-83
The Coca Cola Vendo 83 machine was manufactured from 1946 - 1955. From 1946 - 1947 the Vendo 83 featured a large aluminum face plate. In 1948 Vendo dropped the aluminum face plate and replaced it with two stainless steel horizontal bars. Vendo hauled production on the Vendo 83 after the 1955 model year. In 1956 Coca Cola began a new advertising campaign. Coke wanted a fresher new look. From 1956 on, all Coca Cola machines would have the top 12" painted DuPont Iceberg White. Since the Vendo 83 discontinued production at the end of 1955, all Vendo 83's originally were solid red. Coke brought some V-83's back in for a repaint to the new 1956 paint scheme. You can spot these re-painted machines easily by the obvious two-tone paint, the really flat paint they used and they normally didn't mask the machines very well either. So, the original black door gasket would be painted right over with the new two-tone look
Since the Vendo 83 was the first upright machine Coca-Cola had, they were very interested in its usability. The Vendo 83 was allowing Coke, in bottles to break sales records. It was in their best interest to use the V-83 to its full potential. Even though Vendo halted production on the V-83 at the end of 1955, many were updated or converted along with the updated paint scheme
This Vendo 83 was repainted with the two tone paint scheme then converted to a multi-selection machine. This late 50's conversion allows the customer to view the selection through the bottle door while turning the handle to the right. Once your selection was visible, you simply inserted your 10 cents then lift the bottle door
Selectivend Corporation offered their conversion kits to many models. Above, you can see the Vendo 83 conversion. This conversion offered 9 selections with a 99 bottle vending capacity. It also allowed for the adjustability of bottle sizes from 6 to 12 oz bottles. Sure wish these conversions where still available

Vendo 59 Coca Cola Machine
1948-1951
Not much is known about the Vendo 59. Most of these were Westinghouse machines that Vendo purchased then added there coin operated top and inside mechanism. These were an early version of the V-23. To operate the V-59, you simply inserted 5 cents in the slot, then rotated the top lid to the next bottle. You would then opened the lid and pull out your beverage
The Coca Cola Vendo 59 machine was manufactured from 1948 - 1951. It will only vend the small 8 oz Coke bottles or small 7 oz beer bottles if you wish, and it only offers one selection. Vendo hauled production of the Vendo 59 after the 1951 model year. Since the V-59 was really a Westinghouse chest box, it came with a less than great Frigidaire cooling system. Now days this can be replaced with a brand new, more efficiant cooling system but it is a cost to consider when restoring a V-59

Vendo Six-Case Vertical Coca Cola Machine
1948-1956
 
The Coca Cola 6-CV was Vendo's first multi-drink upright soda machine. This machine holds 6-cases of bottled soda but was never manufactured with a coin mechanism. The 6-CV was designed for Point-of-Purchase sales in grocery stores. To operate the 6-CV, you simply opened the door, removed your bottle and paid the cashier along with any other items you where purchasing
The Coca Cola Vendo 6-CV machine was manufactured from 1948 - 1956 and was built in two different versions. The late version had an external removable cap catcher where as the early version had the cap catcher internally, like the Vendo 83. The 6-CV's are really nice machines, not only do they hold 6 cases of bottles but they will accept bottle sizes from the new small 8 oz Coke bottle up to a 12 oz long neck bottle. They can also easily accept 12 oz cans! The 6-CV does all this with 10 selections to choose from. They truly are a very nice versatile machine! The Vendo 6-CV used the exact same cabinet as the V-83, having just changed the inner liner and the front door. Vendo hauled production on the Vendo 6-CV after the 1956 model year

Vendo 39 Coca Cola Machine

The Coca Cola V-39 was Vendo's first coin operated upright machine for smaller locations. This was the smaller version of the Vendo 83 and worked on the same principle. To operate the V-39, you simply inserted 5 or 10 cents in the slot, the coin mechanically allows you to crank the handle, this action turns the bottle drum inside and retrieves 1 of the 39 bottles this machine will vend. The V-39 will only vend one selection and will only hold the new 8 oz Coke bottles or 7 oz beer bottles if your wish. Having been manufactured for smaller locations, the Vendo 39 was seen everywhere from outside of general stores to gas stations. Vendo built around 80,000 of these so, they are extremely common
The Coca Cola Vendo 39 was manufactured from 1949 - 1957. From 1949 - 1955 the Vendo 39 came in solid red and "ICE COLD" script at the bottom of the front door. The coin entry plate was stamped stainless steel. From 1956 - 1957 the Vendo 39 came in two-tone paint and "Vendo" script at the bottom of the front door. The coin entry was a chrome casting. Vendo hauled production on the Vendo 39 after the 1957 model year

Since the Coca-Cola Vendo 39 was a very common, popular machine and it was on many locations already, many people chose to convert their V-39 to a multi-drink machine rather than purchase a whole new Coke machine. For the conversion in the photo above, a plexy glass window was added to the inside of the main door. A hand crank was also added to the front of the machine in order to turn the drum. Now, the customer could turn the hand crank to view their selections through the plexy glass window. Once there selection was visible, they would insert 10 cents, cranked down on the coin mechanism handle, this action would lock the drum in place so you could not pull out more than one bottle. And slide open the plexy glass window to retrieve their selection. The plexy glass window in the photo above has seen better days. Originally, it was clear
Selectivend Corporation offered their conversion kits to many models. Above, you can see the V-39 conversion. This conversion offered 6 selections with a 48 bottle vending capacity. Vendo 23 Coca Cola Machine

Vendo 23 Standard
In the 1930's and early 1940's, Vendo had built a coin operated top that could be installed on Westinghouse chest machines making them into a coin operated machine. In 1949 Vendo chose to build a whole machine based on that top and so was born the Vendo 23 Coca Cola machine. The Vendo 23 was offered as an alternative to the much larger upright machines. To operate the V-23, you simply inserted 5 or 10 cents in the slot on the top lid, the coin mechanically allows you to turn the chrome “Orange Squeezer” style knob. This action spins the top and retrieves 1 of the 23 bottles this machine will vend. For this reason the Vendo 23 is referred to as the "Spin Top" machine. The V-23 will only vend one selection and it will only hold the new 8 oz Coke bottles or the small 7 oz beer bottles if you wish. Having been manufactured for smaller locations, the Vendo 23 was seen everywhere from outside of general stores to gas stations. Vendo built around 40,000+ of the V-23 so, they are quite common. The Vendo 23 is a really nice, small machine that runs very quietly. It will usually fit in even the smallest of places. For this reason I have seen them in kitchens or located behind the bar in the family rec-room
The Coca Cola Vendo 23 was manufactured from 1949 – 1959. It was offered in Standard and Deluxe. The Deluxe (pictured above) featured a painted silver top lid, embossed "Coca Cola" and a lower storage area for your empty bottles with a bi-fold hinge. So, the tray stayed pretty level as you pulled the door open. Most Deluxe models also have "ICE COLD" script at the bottom as well. The Standard model V-23 came in solid red paint, had a "Coca Cola" decal on the front and a lower storage area for empty bottles with a one piece door. So, the tray would tilt with the door as you pulled it open. The Standard model V-23 usually had the "Vendo" script at the bottom instead of "ICE COLD" The early Vendo 23's had a small chrome knob style handle on the lid requiring you to grab and spin the top yourself rotating the lid to the next bottle. The Chrome “Orange Squeezer” style knob version is much easier to operate. Vendo hauled production on the Vendo 23 after the 1959 model year. I have seen the Vendo 23 offered in 1960's sales brochure from Vendo. So, there must have been many V-23’s left over they were trying to sell off

Vendo 83 Electric Coca Cola Machine

Beginning in the 1952 model year, Vendo offered the model 83 Coca Cola machine with a new electronic coin mechanism. This required the addition of a large coin door to the front of the machine. To operate the V-83 “Electric” version, you simply insert 5 or 10 cents in the slot on the coin door, the coin electronically activates a solenoid that allows you to lift the silver bottle door. This action turns the bottle drum inside and retrieves 1 of the 83 bottles this machine will vend. The V-83 offers one selection and will only accept the new 8 oz Coke bottles or the small 7 oz beer bottles if you wish

Vendo 110 Coca Cola Machine
1952-1959
The V-110 was Vendo's coin operated version of the 6-CV multi-drink upright soda machine. The V-110 could be placed in unattended locations where the 6-CV could not
The Coca Cola Vendo 110 was manufactured from 1952 - 1959 with the top corners “Rounded” The V-110 was built in three different versions: From 1952 - 1955 the V-110 was solid red with a stamped stainless steel coin entry plate. In 1956 Vendo added the two tone paint scheme and replaced the coin entry plate with a chrome one. And finally, from 1957 - 1959 Vendo added a large coin door to the front in order to accommodate a larger coin mechanism that was capable of giving change back from a quarter. The chrome coin entry plate grew larger and now included a window to display “Correct Change Only” The V-110 is a very versatile machine. Not only will it vend 110 bottles but, it will also accept bottle sizes from the small 7 oz beer bottles, the new small 8 oz Coke bottle up to a 12 oz long neck bottle. The V-110 also offers 10 selections! The Vendo 110 uses the same cabinet as the V-83 and the 6-CV, having just changed the inner liner and the front door. Vendo hauled production on the Vendo 110 "Round Corner" version toward the end of the 1959 model year. But, because the V-110 had proven itself, they began production on the "Square Corner" version of the Vendo 110 for the 1960 model year

Vendo 81 Coca Cola Machine

The Coca Cola Vendo 81 machine was manufactured from 1955 - 1958 with the top corners "Rounded" The V-81 was built in three different versions: In 1955 this model was listed as a V-81A. It came in solid red paint with a chrome coin entry plate casting. In 1956, this model was called the V-81B. Vendo added the two-tone paint scheme and made the Coca-Cola lettering on the front door much larger. Finally, from 1957 – 1958, this model was called the V-81D. Vendo added a large coin door, on the front in order to accommodate a larger coin mechanism capable of giving change for a quarter. The V-81 is a very versatile machine. Not only will it vend 81 bottles but, it will accept bottle sizes from the small 7 oz beer bottle, the new small 8 oz Coke bottle up to a 12 oz long neck bottle. The V-81 also offers 9 selections! The Vendo 81 uses the same cabinet as the V-80, having just changed the inner liner and the front door. The V-81 is also roughly the same out dimensions as the V-39. Vendo hauled production on the Vendo 81 "Round Corner" version toward the end of the 1958 model year. But, because the V-81 had proven itself, in 1960 Vendorlator began production on the "Square Corner" version of the 81 for off brands such as Pepsi, 7-up etc. Vendo then replaced the 81 with their new model for Coke, the V-90 “square top”
